Recovery Retreat for Those in a 12-Step Program: The Intersection of Jesuit Spirituality and Recovery

December 13 @ 6:00 pm - December 15 @ 12:00 pm

Directed by Brad Hamrlik

Drawing inspiration from the books Father Ed: The Story of Bill W’s Spiritual Sponsor by Dawn E. Goldstein and The Soul of Sponsorship by Robert Fitzgerald, SJ, this retreat explores the connections between Ignatian Spirituality and recovery.

Father Ed Dowling, SJ, one of Bill W.’s spiritual advisors, reached out to him in 1940 to share insights on the parallels between the 12 Steps and the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. This encounter became one of Bill W.’s three major epiphanies, shaping the course of his journey. Explore the deep and enduring friendship that unfolded between these two remarkable men, lasting until Father Ed’s passing two decades later.

Join us as we navigate the intersection of Ignatian Spirituality and recovery, seeking wisdom, understanding, and inspiration for your journey. Immerse yourself in a space where spirituality and recovery converge, offering insights and practices to enrich your personal growth and well-being.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This retreat is not suitable for anyone in acute withdrawal or initial stages of recovery. Please consult a behavioral health hospital. This retreat serves those seeking ongoing motivation for sobriety maintenance.

This is a silent retreat. Guests are expected to maintain a sacred silence throughout the retreat, including at meals, unless otherwise noted.

Brad Hamrlik has served as a spiritual director since 2004 while earning his Certificate in Spiritual Direction at Loyola University in Chicago as a Jesuit in formation. He made the 30-day Silent Retreat form of the Spiritual Exercises and has led others through the 19th Annotation Retreat in Everyday Life form. Brad has served Ignatius House as a member of the Board of Directors. He also co-directed the Contemplative Leaders in Action program for young adults through Ignatius House.  As a young adult “seeker”, Brad experienced God in may ways; but only after beginning spiritual direction with Sr. Pat Thompson did he begin to communicate with God in a two-way dialogue. “In all my Catholic upbringing, I never learned how to develop an actual relationship with God—I learned that from Sr. Pat and all the wonderful Jesuits I have encountered, as well as from all the beautiful lay folks dedicated to this ministry.” Brad is open to working with anyone seeking a deeper relationship with God. He has particular experience working with young adults; former, prospective, and current religious; and those in recovery.Brad lives in Roswell with his wife, two children, and two dogs. He enjoys sailing and nature.
